In my experience, math coordinators tend to be conservative. Just FYI.

Also, speak with the math content specialist at your middle school. They can do an evaluation and make a recommendation. If your kid is misplaced too high, the math teacher should catch it after a few weeks and they may shift your student to a better fit class.

There is a test, at least there was for my son when he started 6th grade at Tilden from out of state. That said, he wasn't a good test taker then (later diagnosed with ADHD) and we pushed to have him placed up a level in math because he'd already done all the math they were doing in his class and he's exceptionally good at math (even if he takes tests very slowly). He did great at the higher level and it put him on track to go through multivariable calculus in HS. If your DS is given the choice of two classes based on the test or on your discussion with the math department at his new school, I'd push to have him take the higher one and see how he does.

It is likely this varies school to school. You may want to contact your school's math content specialist (department head) to ask how they handle it.

I know that MCPS offers compacted math in 4th and 5th grade and that those students are essentially one year ahead when they enter middle school. How are students new to MCPS in middle school placed? Is there a test/screening process? DC is strong in math but I don't know how the curriculum at their existing school compares to MCPS and want to be sure they are placed appropriately. TIA.
