It's been a while, but freshman on Newton Campus, or Upper Campus for that matter, don't hang out in Newton Center. It's not really an undergraduate student locale. The other posters on this thread were correct. Head to Cleveland Circle and go to Cityside.
On a parents weekend, you might see some kids with their parents in Newton Center or Chestnut Hill, but usually not otherwise.

This is for a college visit - deciding whether to apply ED to BC. We've been to Boston several times but not around BC. Now not sure if we should go to dinner in Chestnut Hill area (where our Marriott is) or go to Newton Centre, where I understand there's a decent chance DD's freshman dorm would be.

Students go to Cleveland Circle. It’s funny that many don’t explore further than that, but there’s awesome food in Coolidge Corner, down Beacon a few T stops.
Students with parents paying go to Newton Centre.

Cafe Landwer is an easy walk from campus and had a nice mix of options for our group. It's also across from the T so it was easy for some members of our group to head downtown.

Oh - never mind if this was for a college visit. I was in Parents weekend mindset. If college visit - then Cleveland Circle is where to go. Or just one of the small places at the chestnut hill T stop across from St Ignatius. Or see if you can eat in a dining hall

Yup Cleveland circle. There is not much else around the school, chestnut hill is a relatively sleepy town. If the BC kids aren’t on campus and they aren’t in Cleveland circle, then they are traipsing around Boston and you’ll never discern them from the 800,000 other coeds from the other universities.

Go to Cleveland circle to check out the vibe. There are bars and restaurants there that all the BC kids go to. City side has been there at least since I was there in the 90s. It is about a mile from campus. I never really went anywhere past Cleveland circle.
