Some people just shouldn’t eat out. My MIL is one of them. Nothing is ever right. Toast isn’t right color, bacon isn’t crispy enough, order is taking too long. If you’re that high maintenance, stay home and make it yourself.

Myself, sure I’ve had bad food and lousy service, but have never asked for it to be free.

Every week in Tom Sietsema’s chat someone complains about not getting comped for whatever reason.

The only time I witnessed terrible customers was more than 20 years ago in Utah. The 60-something man was loudly berating the young waitress about the quality of the food - as if she had anything to do with it - and telling her "if my wife made food like this, I'd throw it out". And his wife was right there, saying nothing. I can only imagine he was a total jerk to his wife as well.

We watched this family ask repeatedly for a manager because “we deserve something off the bill”. I was so appalled by their behavior I tipped her double because I know they stiffened her and called her slow and stupid. She was half in tears and shaking. Unfortunately on my trip this is not the first time I’ve seen this where people come into a restaurant then complain about nothing looking for a free meal. Have you noticed an uptick in this behavior?

It's interesting. Yesterday I had lunch at a restaurant in the DFW airport. I waited quite awhile for my food, but didn't ask about it or get agitated. The manager brought my plate and apologized and said that she had taken care of the check. I told her that I was happy to pay. Then when my server brought my $0 check, I again said that I was happy to pay. They didn't let me, even though I was uncomfortable paying nothing. So, the reverse problem!

You give a nice tip.

It doesn’t sound like the “family
Of 3” OP describes are old people, you ageist.

They sound like young grifters to me.

OP here. It was a husband and wife (maybe late 40s) and their late teen son. Wife had a Chanel purse that looked real to me.

I doubt it.

I have never done it but given the issue I don’t think it’s unreasonable. They need to limit tables if they don’t have enough staff.

I have a friend who I’ve discovered treats wait staff like doodoo. It’s shocking. Maybe you just happened to be there when someone is like this.
