I watched a family of 3 order only crab appetizers and cocktails and then chew the waitress out for a slow drink service. We had the same waitress who did warn us the bar was backed up because they had a bartender out sick. This is a popular tourist restaurant and it was slammed. We watched this family ask repeatedly for a manager because “we deserve something off the bill”. I was so appalled by their behavior I tipped her double because I know they stiffened her and called her slow and stupid. She was half in tears and shaking. I told her she did a great job and let her manager know the other table guests were being jerks. Unfortunately on my trip this is not the first time I’ve seen this where people come into a restaurant then complain about nothing looking for a free meal. Have you noticed an uptick in this behavior?
It's interesting. Yesterday I had lunch at a restaurant in the DFW airport. I waited quite awhile for my food, but didn't ask about it or get agitated. The manager brought my plate and apologized and said that she had taken care of the check. I told her that I was happy to pay. Then when my server brought my $0 check, I again said that I was happy to pay. They didn't let me, even though I was uncomfortable paying nothing. So, the reverse problem!

It doesn’t sound like the “family
Of 3” OP describes are old people, you ageist.
They sound like young grifters to me.
OP here. It was a husband and wife (maybe late 40s) and their late teen son. Wife had a Chanel purse that looked real to me.
