If they want to replace it then they pay. You are not obligated to subsidize them.

#1 The fence has to be on one side or the other.
#2 There is no such thing as a shared fence.
#3 Better just one person pay for it so responsibility for the fence is a single party.

I’d pay if my neighbors are on a tight budget, because it’s worth it to me to not look at/have my property value affected by a fence that’s falling down if I didn’t want to build my own on my side. Not because it’s my problem per se. But it would still be their fence and it still needs to be completely on one property or the other.

Honestly I have never agreed to sharing in the cost of a fence though we’ve been approached at two of the houses we’ve owned - but I understand that some just don’t mind.

A fence always belongs to one party. You don’t want anything to do with a shared fence. I can think of situations where I’d pay to help replace their fence, but it would be their fence. You need to reroute the fence so it’s fully on one property or the other.

+1 We share a side with our neighbor and we didn't ask them for money when we replaced our fence. We were the ones that wanted to replace it, and...wait for it...it's our fence!

The issue is they are charging OP.

Get some estimates or ask for a copy of how much materials/cost is. Its ok to say no if you don't want it done.

Do you back up to them or share a side with them?

If they want to replace it, let them replace it themselves.

If they want you you to share the expense they can go through a reputable fence installer... is that what they are?

That seems insanely cheap to me.

Neighbor wants to replace the old fence and asking to share the cost. They will do it themselves as they are in the business and want us to share half the cost. Their estimate was about $2500 total for about 40 feet which seems a bit pricey. They mentioned about the fence being a few feet off the property line and they have put in iron posts to mark the actual line. We did a full survey several years ago it goes a couple of feet into their property on one end and into ours at the other end. I don't want to pay for a survey again to come and note the line and they said they don't want to pay either. I am ok to share the cost but concerned about the neighbor putting it up themselves. We don't live there so we won't be able to check on the project daily. Anyone btdt and thoughts on how to handle this?
