Um, why aren't you calling the office to ask this question? None of us make the rules at your kid's school.

I did call the school in anticipation, explaining she was a walker and might be late, and they told me a parent would have to sign her in. I told them I was at work, and they said she would need to be signed in by a parent. Luckily she made it in time. I imagine you are all correct in that she would need a parent to sign her in EXCUSED. I can’t imagine they would turn away a child, but stranger things have happened.

A public school? There is no way they can DEMAND she be signed in by a parent. They aren't going to turn her away. Unexcused tardy, BFG. I don't get why schools say this so menacingly. Um, okay.

My kids told me when they’re gonna be late and I call ahead and we have a voicemail. We go to list all the students that will be late or absent.

i think for it to be excused you would need to sign in but there is really no issue with an unexcused tardy so I would not worry about it. I assume these will happen when the student over slept etc...not really something that should be excused.

I would pre sign a note with a generic excuse that something happened at your house that morning that caused her to leave late. Have her fill in the date and hand it in if needed. This assumes she's generally responsible.

I can't imagine that a school would require a parent present on tardy mornings, OP. Plenty of parents leave for work before their kid is in school. You can call and ask to reassure you.

Have you asked the school?

I would venture majority of kids coming in late don’t have a parent signing them. They send them on their way but will get an unexcused tardy.

It's middle school. An unexcused tardy is about the most pointless thing possible

Ok…
OP is asking what happens and they is what happens. Schools handle unexcused tradies differently. Ours calls your parent for the first, for the second, you get a detention

In my district, you need a parent signature/email/phone call to make it excused. In the situation you describe, it would be unexcused and they would send her right to class.

I’m guessing they would allow you to call, email, or send a note the next day. They aren’t going to turn your kid away. When I drop my kid off late and go in it’s noticeable that most late kids don’t have a parent available to sign them in.

My middle schooler locks up and walks herself to school. It’s procedure that if a student is late, they must be signed in by a parent. What happens if she one day is late (for whatever reason) and walks to school late? Can she sign herself in or will they make me drive there from work?
