My babies mostly wore one-piece outfits their first year. Pants just pull down the top edge of the diaper leading to a big mess that has to be changed out. We had entire outfits that were never worn because it was too inconvenient to dress the baby in multiple pieces or the clothes didn't fit well or the clothes were the wrong season. (A baby born in the summer will never wear newborn sized sweatpants.) If it was a special outfit gifted from a special loved one then I would dress up the baby, snap some adorable pictures, and likely change it out at the next diaper change.

So much easier to change diaper without pants especially since newborns poop so much.

I’m sorry, but I’m team wife. Gifts are given with good wishes and hopes they’ll bring the recipient some happiness. Your wife can appreciate the good wishes that came with the gift without using it. If she doesn’t want to use the gift, then she shouldn’t. The last thing I want when I give a gift is for it tp create an obligation or burden that the recipient will resent.

When my baby was born there were too many clothes to practically use them all. Everyone buys newborn sizes which they quickly outgrow. What i liked to keep mine in were the gowns. They were super comfortable and convenient for diaper changes.

I thought it somewhat ironic that the baby had more new clothes than they could reasonably wear, but since I was still too large for my pre-pregnancy size and maternity was no longer necessary, I was a little short on clothing.

I propose you thank everyone for the gifts, let your wife do what she wants, and if there are any particular outfits you want to see, you can dress him, take his picture, and have backup clothes if he gets uncomfortable. When he outgrows the clothes, pass them on or donate them. Eventually, everything will get worn and someone may be very grateful to have something brand new for their child if everything else is secondhand.

Meanwhile, you might encourage your wife to splurge a little and get something new for herself. Once the baby comes, everyone tends to overlook mom - especially the mom herself.

You dress him and you change all the diapers. Problem solved!

This is why most baby registries have almost no clothing on them, and the clothing people do register for is usually like 3-6mo size, or larger. And yet people insist on buying these elaborate outfits for newborns.

If you wan to dress your child you should be able to do so. Why does your wife decide what the baby wears?

Many people dress their babies in clothes, it is normal. If there is an outfit you like or end any to wear (maybe gift giver is visiting), put it on baby.

Is your wife controlling in other ways?

90% of gifted baby clothes get worn once or twice and then given away. We had tons of baby clothes that never fit or were too impractical to ever be worn, including a bunch of *expensive* fancy dresses from my mom (an infant can put on a fancy dress for about 5 minutes, tops, maybe for one photo, before it will be covered in milk, throw up, or other bodily fluids).

Meanwhile, the two boxes of hand-me-down cotton onesies or soft, cotton separates with stretched out elastics or wrap fasteners? Kid lived in those. Could go through 4-5 a day in the early months. Easy to wash, and since used I could care less about them getting stained or drooled on. Didn't irritate the baby's skin (she had baby eczema, super common). Didn't irritate MY skin when I was nursing or trying to get her to sleep.

Unless your the primary person changing the baby, feeding the baby, and doing the baby's laundry, your opinion is worth jack $hit.

Then get up and be the one that dresses your baby in the morning. Pack the diaper bag with the extra set of clothes that aren’t onsies.

Why do you care?

This is an odd thing to fixate on.

But by all means, if you want your baby in a 3 piece suit, dress him up! Take photos! Knock yourself out! Have fun!

It's very common that babies outgrow their gifts faster than they can use them. So if they're too tight, yes, time to donate, OP. If people want to give you stuff, request several sizes in advance if you can, although then you can run into seasonal issues.

If you're fixating on waste now, you have a LOOONG next 18 years of your life! Kids makes messes and grow in spurts. You'll be wasting more than a few outfits, believe me. And some kids total the first car they drive. Hasn't happened yet to my teens, but I've heard stories from others. The "waste" gets more expensive as they grow!
