Op here: when we viewed the home, there was wood panelling in that portion of the basement that we were told the owner was having taken down. So that happened so we had no clue what was behind the panelling…which is all that mold. We did not realize how bad the subfloor was until the inspection and took the pics of how badly warped and rotted it was. The basement definitely did have a bit of a musty smell but nothing overbearing.
