Not any more. The county sent out info to high school principals last week. Based on expectations from MSDE, a student who arrives 90% late should be marked tardy. Only over 90% late is to be marked absent. Our teachers got this info earlier this week.

OP - Follow up on these errors as some teachers do follow the county grading policy that allows for downgrading for unexcused absences. Errors will happen with 150+ students a day, with many arriving late or out all period at the health room, guidance counselor...Also, some parents may discover that the absence was correct and that their child was actually skipping. Great kids sometimes make the wrong choice.

Yes. There are so many teacher errors and mistakes with attendance. It’s worth correcting though so email to have it corrected.

We had this issue too. The attendance clerk was not at all helpful.

This happened a lot to DS during the last 2 years - 8th and 9th. Sometimes it was a sub but other times there was no explanation. We were told he should speak directly to the teacher and have it corrected which he did each time. We never had a teacher fail to correct it.

Teachers can only mark kids present or absent (tardy excused or tardy unexcused).

The attendance secretary is the one who can change an absence to excused.

As for a teacher incorrectly marking the kid absent when they were there. It really is up to you.

In the grand scheme of things, this isn't really something I worry about. Grades yes, studying yes, attendance mistakes no.

Send an email to correct (and have a record). Often it's the kids not answering roll call as the class is too noisy.

I don't even have kids in high school yet and I email to correct errors. I just think it should accurately reflect that my kid was in (or was excused).

I always call and correct the record so it’s accurate.

I have no experience with this issue. But I would send an email to the attendance clerk to correct record.

Between my two high schoolers they have three unexcused absence this year. Each unexcused absence is the result of an error by the teacher taking attendance or the attendance secretary. One I picked the kid up early and signed them out. The other two were clearly teacher mistakes, my kids completed the tests and quizzes taken in class on those days. And they really just aren’t the type to skip.

Is it worth correcting the record on these? If it was a teacher error does the teacher need to fix it? One kid asked the teacher to fix it and they said they would but it still appears as unexcused.

If there are no real consequences for faulty unexcused absences it probably isn’t worth running down. I’m just trying to get a sense of how others deal this this type of thing.
