I can’t help but laugh when Google and yelp reviews have the nastiest most unappealing photos of food and the reviewer says 5/5 stars excellent food! Lot of rubes just love their slop.

I feel like all of them must have squeeze bottles full of vegetable oil that they overuse when they cook food. Makes sure nothing sticks on griddle or their pans but makes everything so freaking greasy.

But the diner car itself can be a vintage, collectible one. The idea of comfort food with service, instead of fast food, is appealing.
The food is never, ever good. You make better comfort food at home!

Some of the ones in ritzy New England towns are really cute and serve half-decent food. But we’re rarely up there. Outside of that, pretty universally terrible.

Is it the diner food or is it the vibes? One of my friends loves the diner scene - then I went back to her hometown in NJ and we hung out with her friends (this was a few years ago, immediately post college) and I was like oh - I get it - this is so cozy and snuggly.

I think it's all about expectations. I don't expect fine dining. I expect filling, quick, relatively cheap, and somewhat tasty. Most diners meet that standard; some are better than I expect, some worse. And I like the atmosphere of older diners, including the old forks. You don't. Neither of us is wrong; we just have different preferences.

Frankly the food sucks. And the coffee sucks too. All the food has a greasy film. The syrup is the fake corn syrup kind. The eggs are rubbery. The bacon is always sort of chewy and undercooked. The forks feel old. We are on the road a ton for the kids’ travel sports, so we visit dozens of dinners annually, and they’re all pretty crummy.
