Why is your child holding the ball so long. Maybe ask the coach what your child is doing wrong, but you stop the ball, send the ball... or stop, 1 touch, send the ball.

I'm confused why your child is possessing the ball long enough for someone to take it.

Nope. Former college soccer player. I understand where you got this guidance regarding passing but you’ve over generalized it. Dribbling down the field and protecting your ball is a good skill.

Is your DC the ball stealer?

When/where did the OP say his/her DC is doing 4+ touches? Geez.

Had this happen once, but it was a basketball from a dead grandparent. Such class. Confirmed the guy is a grade A arsehole, as suspected.

I'm sorry PP. That would make me really upset.

DC's brand new ball was taken away on the last day of a small camp. The kids went to get ice cream for 5 minutes. Then the ball was gone. DC had spotted it right before the ice cream so he knew exactly where it was. A kid was obviously making plans to pilfer it since it disappeared so quickly. We usually buy cheap balls specifically because even the cheap balls get regularly stolen but this was the child's only birthday present this year.

This is teens and the player also roams the field being out of position a huge percentage of the time.
It's usually when someone is dribbling to open space and scanning for the best pass. They won't be thinking, 'I should defend the ball from my own player' and then the kid will come in and just take the ball away. The ball has been taken away from multiple kids over multiple games. The kid will then boot the ball forward, anywhere. Sometimes that works but most of the time the ball is just lost but everyone claps because it has gone forward.

Not sure how old a kid you are talking about, but even teens don’t always have the executive function skills to stop themselves from going for a passed ball even when it’s clear to any observer that it wasn’t passed to them. If they are just steeling the ball from a teammate dribbling down the field then that is a problem. But it doesn’t surprise me. We’ve gotten lucky with several coaches who promote sportsmanship and solid team play, but we had one who seemed to actually spur on a kind of Lord of the Flies atmosphere.

Lol yes seen it a lot. Here is the thing 95% of these coaches suck. You have the ball stealers, the kid who roams from position to position, the every time I get the ball I must put my head down and dribble, etc. Coach never corrects and gives these type of players more time.

I remember watching a player take all the free kicks and corners. The kid was horrible at it. 9 out of 10 corners would go out of bounds. Coach just sat there. I guess development means not letting anyone else take a free kick or corner.

Is it a jump type ball? If so and there isn't time to call it, both teammates should probably go in hard on the ball to avoid the possibility that both end up standing around and losing the ball, which can easily happen in those situations!

It's not rec.

Your DC needs to loudly yell, “Stop stealing the ball from your own teammates!”

But is this travel or Rec.? Sounds like Rec since the other kid is out of position if he/she is stealing the ball from his/her teammates. Either way, the coach should not condone is behavior even in Rec.
