Are you a gov lawyer in your 40s?

I’m planning on it. I envisioned myself ten years in the future with or without a job change. Best case and worst case. Made the decision easy. I need more light at the end of the tunnel than a moderate pension and a crappy federal salary until then.

I didn't but it's because I have enough money not to work. I simply went part time and take several vacations in a year to tolerate my work before I retire at 50.

Govt benefits are only worth it if you have been there a long time since otheri places pay more.

He actually has to get that pay and not be laid off in his 50s. Both may not be easy. Pension alone is worth $30k a year, doubling your salary outside of law or medicine is unlikely (won’t happen in tech, too old)

I get it. I’m also about ten years from retirement a plan on changing roles in a few years and then again a few years after that. Life’s too short to spend doing something that isn’t fulfilling.

I switched jobs at age 54, and I’m hoping to retire by age 60.

When are you planning on retiring? I switched jobs 3x times since I turned 54.

Yes. Ten years is a long time. Go for it OP! (Wouldn't walk away from a federal job as PP noted tho. In that case, ten years isn't really that long.)

Well, I'd have to see how much money I'd be leaving on the table. I'd be giving up something, that's for sure. the pension is awesome.

10 years is a long time so yeah I’d make a move. Are you giving up any benefits for your 20 year tenure?

Absolutely change jobs. Life’s too short to be unhappy for 10 more years. I switched jobs last October and have no regrets: more money, better environment and less work.
