Not high school but a newly minted 7th grader coming from a school with little to no homework is having a really tough time adjusting . Lots of arguments, slammed doors and frustration. I feel for everyone here and hope it gets better soon.

Wow....thought we were on this island alone, so glad to see that we're not!

Our kid just started at a new HS and is also up to 3 hours of homework most nights...it would be 4 hours, but DC has a free period during the school day and does some of the work there.

DC also snaps at us whenever we ask how their day went. They currently are on a school sports team which practices 4-5 days after school, so that doesn't help, but when we suggested dropping the sport so they could get more acclimated to the new routine/workload/bldg, they refused.

DC is already super-stressed about homework (3+ hours per night) and flies off the handle when we ask how school went today. And it's only 9th grade!

NP. I’m sure they did not “sign up” for that. No one thinks their kid will have 4 hrs of homework. The school needs to frame shift dramatically.

No, the school does not need to frame shift. I'm assuming the student is signed up for a boatload of honors and AP courses. She is getting 4 hours of homework a night because that is what those courses require and or the student can't get the work done for such a rigorous set of courses in a shorter time frame. Parents should drop her down into "regular" level courses for at least 2, maybe 3 classes. Nothing wrong with that. I'm not being a jerk. My own child dropped from honors to regular physics junior year and dropped out of another AP into an honors course senior year. Parents cannot have their students signed up for super hard courses and then complain it's too hard or too time consuming.

What school is this with 4 or 5 hours of HW a night? Insanity. Pull your kid. It's not worth it.

There is another thread going where posters say as much…that the schools all assign 3+ hours of homework. I agree it is too much. And really do feel bad for the kid. But it just seems to be the reality of many of these highly competitive schools, however misguided, no?

Sorry, OP. The academic jump from 8th to high school can be huge. Don’t forget to make sure they go to the teacher office hours. They can get back on track and change the teachers opinion by doing that!
