I have a hound who smells great, and has never taken a bath. BUT I brush him a lot, wipe down his legs and feet at least once a day, make sure his paw pads don't have cracks and if they do treat them overnight with balm and socks while he's in his crate, and keep his ears clean. Oh, and he doesn't hang in the yard very long, otherwise there would be digging and inevitably become a smelly dog. Might seem totally overkill, but it works for us.

Each dog needs the food best suited to them, obviously. They could have very different gut microbes, just like humans.

Maybe try a different protein or grain?

This! Most minor issues can be resolved just by switching their food.

Thank you! I like the idea of this. Right now he eats 1/2 beef (Honest Kitchen) and 1/2 fish (Fromm Gold). He can't eat chicken. Any suggestion?

Chicken is one the main ingredients in all of the Fromm GOLD line. Which Honest Kitchen Beef are you using? There’s dehydrated(grain free, whole grain, gourmet grains) OR is it the kibble?

And are you sure it’s not one the Fromm a la veg or one of the grain free?

Op here. Mistake on my part! His old food was Fromm chicken a la veg. The current one is Trout & Whitefish.

The Honest Kitchen one is the Beef Whole Grain recipe, which is dehydrated so I mix with water. Not kibble.

Another +1 for food change. Fish based food made my dog's coat much nicer.

Sprinkle him with baking soda between baths? Work it into his skin, not just on his coat?

What type of shampoo do you use? When I bathed him weekly, his skin got really itchy so I doubled down on brushing and wet wipes. I was using a Burt’s Bees dog shampoo. Right now I have a Wahl deodorizing shampoo that doesn’t seem to help much.

And oddly enough my dog is the furthest thing from a water dog! He doesn’t like to swim or splash in puddles. But will very happily dig in sand or mud

Seriously. He is the sweetest dog I've ever had, but oh my lord. The stink.

He's a shepherd mix. And he constantly, constantly reeks. I brush him. I wash him. He gets oily and stinky. I brush him again. And wash him again. My house smells like him. He smells like him.

Zero health conditions beyond some mild tartar and his breath is fine! The vet, "Some dogs are just kinda oily and smelly. That's how he is."

I saw a probiotic skin spray at Petco. Maybe something like that? I can't use fragranced products due to my allergies, so that's one roadblock. But there's got to be something to help! All my windows are open today and the house still smells.

Anyone else with a stinky dog? What did you do that helped?
