I am the OP, and I agree with you on the point that "foreign" is too broad of a term. Yet, it also means that we can learn different things from the new culture. My thread is partially to express my admiration for American women many of whom had a positive influence on my life. I learned a lot and will pay it forward.

They learn everybody needs some time on their own and everybody needs some time all alone.

That diversity is good, actually.
That marrying outside your own race and religion doesn’t have to be stigmatized.
That my place of birth and parents’ ethnicity doesn’t make me who I am as an individual.

to add.. I'm an immigrant female, and I have immigrant friends from all over, including Europe and South America.

What does that mean enmeshed concept of family?

I learned that its okay to expect and demand privacy and boundaries and give it to others too. My culture has a more enmeshed concept of family.

Everyone can learn and teach something to and from others, that's how we grow and evolve as a person and as a species. Education isn't limited to books and classrooms.

I don't like how the other thread turned into bashing American women. Here's what I believe I learned from my American peers:

- I learned that attention from men does not define my value
- I learned not to care what men think of the way I dress, style my hair, etc.
- I don't think "a feminist" is an offensive term, I am proud to be one
- I learned that it's okay to be sweet and nurturing with my kids in public
- I learned that other women (and men) mostly wish me well and try to make me feel accepted
- I learned how to offer help and ask for help
- I admire how American women can organize to effectively contribute to the community
