I guess I am ignorant here, as my kids have all attended private school. Public schools allow cell phones to be out DURING class?

My child is a Junior at O'Connell and they do a great job of making sure cell phones are away during all classes. Each classroom has these little hanging holders for the phones.

SSSAS does this too. I think it’s becoming more and more common in the private schools.

Most private high schools have a strict cell phone policy. But that doesn’t stop the students from texting one another with their iMessage app on their Macs and iPads.

Just remember that even at the so-called big 3, plenty of kids play games and watch videos on their school laptops. As fast as the schools block access, the kids figure out a hack.

I have found Edmund Burke is pretty good about this. They allow high school kids to have phones, but really want them off and put away during the day and classroom instruction to keep kids engaged.

You should also check out Washington Waldorf School in Bethesda. Waldorf approach to education is notoriously low-tech.

DD is 8th grader and an excellent student. She'd prefer a co-ed Catholic school but DH and I want to open the search so we're open-minded to anything with a reasonable commute from North Arlington. Which high schools have a culture where students aren't on their phones a lot? This is increasingly important to me. Is this even reasonable? I'd prioritize a school with strict cell phone policies. Suggestions?
