OP here. The bugs were mostly dead. Only one of the dozen I found weren't.

It does sound like something was wrong with that plant. I get broccoli from a nearby farm farm (they aren’t certified organic, but they don’t spray their crops) and yes, usually find a bug or two. Never as many as yours had. I chop mine into chunks and soak in water with vinegar for a few minutes, then rinse.

Isn’t broccoli one of the clean fifteen? I don’t buy organic, so never any bugs. Actually, it’s not on either list this year, but I know it’s been on the clean in the past.

I think the WF broccoli probably wasn't a very healthy plant. I got it once and hundreds of bugs came out when I washed. I soaked in water and more came out. I couldn't get it bug free. It was infested. A healthier broccoli plant probably wouldn't have hundreds (thousands?) of bugs on it.

I made Mac and cheese and accidentally got the organic broccoli at Whole Foods. I bought it Monday and cooked Tuesday dinner. Take it out and a living bug comes out. Gross. Wash it as good as I can. Start cutting it and finding more little bugs. I really want broccoli for dinner so I tell myself it can work. Start eating the M/C and still finding bugs, but on the Macaroni. Absolutely gnarly. Never buying organic again. My friend has an organic vegetable farm and she spends half her day picking bugs off her crops. Why would anyone want this?
