T'ai Chi would also be great. I go to classes here with Michael Ward, Cloud Hands T'ai Chi and I would say the average age is 70s. He offers virtual and in-person classes.

I do think some in-person PT to start with would be advisable, so she can get expert evaluation of her strengths and weaknesses, and on what would be most valuable to work on and advice on form.

This YouTube channel is great! I am going to have my mother start with this and maybe build her confidence. Then, maybe we can add a personal trainer. OP

My parents live in a center, and they have a daily exercise class. I think the county might have similar type classes? They do things like chair squats and balance exercises.

Do PT, for sure.
Do Yoga With Adrienne (30 days of Yoga is a good place to start) at home
She could join a pilates or yoga class for older women. She will not be the oldest, frailest, fattest, or most out of shape woman! There is always somebody who needs work!!

My mom goes to a trainer, does pilates, walks. She's slowed down a lot, but keeping active is keeping her healthy (ish)!!

Hi! My mother is in a similar position and her doctor prescribed physical therapy. It’s been great, she gets pool workouts with a trainer as well as work with a resistance band. They work on a lot of functional movements to make sure they can get up out of a chair, driver’s seat of a car etc. They also go through a lot of balance exercises to hopefully avoid a serious fall. If your mom can inquire with her GP I bet almost any senior and get an Rx for PT, it doesn’t have to be for a specific injury (I think my mom was technically diagnosed with osteopenia for her insurance to cover the sessions).
Good luck! Definitely recommend getting a good therapist or trainer to come to your mom.

Hello everyone. My mother is in her mid-70's and I can see a visible decline in her strength and balance. I'm concerned for her long term health. She takes walks most days for about 30 mins but does not break a sweat (she does if it is hot out but not from actually working out).

The reason for my concern is that I've seen her fall on sand at the beach (granted sand is more difficult to walk on) and she has trouble getting up when lying down (weak core).

She is open to doing some strength training exercises and wanted to see if there is a simple program that she can start with to build core strength and improve her balance.

She is very self conscious about going to a gym so exercises that she can do at home would be ideal.

Anyone been there, done that? Open to any and all suggestions, including getting a personal trainer. I want to get her to a place where she feels strong and fit.

Thank you!
