It’s fine. Who eats a whole bag of chips ever.

It’s not like people dipped into the dip she put it in a bowl.

Y’all crazy.

Did you see any cat hairs? Kitty litter paw prints on the counter? That’s when shit gets real…

I would never make it obvious that it was an open container, but we are very hygienic and if I had a fresh but open bag of chips, I will put that in a bowl and serve it. I would put crudités in a new plate and serve (but unlikely since these won’t be fresh even hours later). I would not re-serve something that involves dippping, which can introduce lots of germs.

I think that's really gross, but I also appreciate The Signs so I know not to really eat in someone's home like this. When I see The Signs (dirty powder room when you knew people were coming over, cats walking all over the kitchen counters, general clutter and dirt *when you knew people were coming over*) = nope.

I don't like serving in original containers if store bought. It just seems off to me. This is a super casual thing though, so I can totally see how you wouldn't reopen a new one if the plan was to serve out of the plastic.

+1

Agreed, what I don't know won't hurt me. But I would be grossed out too, with an unknown history. If you have 10 people, get a whole container. Why are you serving half a dip? Get a new one, no matter how casual the gathering is. This is just tacky. Definitely not a "hostess with the mostess"! I also tell my kids something is for the party and they can eat it later with the guests.

Or, like you said, just put it in a ramekin and I will never know.

I make fresh food for parties but not always for casual having friends over for dinner, especially if there’s a weird mix of dietary requirements. Your examples don’t seem “gross” to me; would you find it gross if I made a dip from a not-new jar of sour cream? Because opening a new jar of sour cream just because I had company seems bizarre and wasteful to me and I could see your hostess feeling the same about her dip. What’s she supposed to do with TWO things of half-eaten dip in her fridge?

She brought out a platter with baby carrots, celery and grape tomatoes and a container of French onion dip in the middle. When she lifted the lid off, it was half eaten already.

There are always people in my kitchen during parties, even when I am preparing food. It’s the hub of most parties I attend. That is why people love big kitchens.

Are there kids in the house that couldn’t resist the party treats? Like when kids “test” the icing on the birthday cake before it’s served?

Chips, ice cream, and French onion dip? This sounds like a pretty casual affair and you're talking as it she served a half eaten bag of chips on a silver platter and crystal bowl to formal guests. I think they type of gathering may have played a role.

I would think it strange too. We don’t serve leftovers to company.

Very weird, at least put it on a separate plate so no one knows.

How do you feel about a host/hostess serving food that was already opened and already eaten? Meaning the serve food that was already opened and eaten. This is for a dinner party where 10-20 guests are attending. The hostess made a crudités platter and the French onion dip was already half eaten. Bag of chips were half gone. The ice cream was half eaten when she brought it out to serve. I always buy new packages of food for parties and for my guests. Is it weird or just me? I’m just kinda grossed out.
