WSJ rankings seem to be the least useful when comparing to US News or Niche.

The bolded is such nonsense; I always laugh whenever I read this.

WSJ also lists NJIT as the nation's No.2 public university, beating UC Berkeley.

How many people really think UC Berkeley is worse than NJIT? By the way, what does NJIT stand for? I do not even know.

Being ranked 212 out of 400 seems unjustified given the venerable history of the school and the emphasis on undergraduate teaching. I don't get it.

That said, it is time for president Rowe to go.

W&M was consistently ranked in the low 30s. But due to methodology changes, places like Wisconsin have vaulted ahead of it. This is just a guess, but further changes in the methodology, like eliminating weight for class size and alumni giving — areas where W&M shines — are going to hurt it very much. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it in the upper 50s or even low 60s. Again, just a guess, but you heard it here first.

But still higher than the other VA schools

There are quite a few excellent schools that do very poorly in the WSJ ranking (versus USNWR). For example, Tufts comes in at 287 and Tulane is at 354. Even some of the very solid big publics do very poorly -- Pitt, for example, at 307.

W&M has a strong alumni network and high graduation rates. For in-state residents, the tuition is a fantastic deal. They get a private school education for a public school price.

WSJ rankings seem to be the least useful when comparing to US News or Niche.

Virginia public schools were punished for the very high tuition rates, even after aid, charged to in-state and out-of-state students in the WSJ analysis. I think it’s a fair critique of schools that students may take on heavy debt loads for a degree that doesn’t pay off. Or if the student drops out of college, the debt is a risk for the family.

The WSJ rankings are really a joke. I wouldn’t use it as anything. WM is a great school, period.
