There are few walk ons at our bigger D3. Freshman aren’t even allowed to try out if not recruited, so any walk ons are sophomores or transfers.

In DIII it depends on the conference. People always lump all college level soccer into the DI and DIII categories (and, yes, DII but there are so few). What people don't realize is that school teams in a DIII conference like the UAA involve much stronger play than lower level DI conferences. So to "walk on" to a DIII team it will depend on what conference the school is in.

You may have one or two walk ons, but the vast majority of D1 players are recruited.

They recruit the walk ons. I have heard coach say you will be the first walk on.

There are players on the bottom of the roster at the top schools (great academics and top 20 ranked D1) that were "negotiated" on to the team by their parents and/or club coaches. Good students but have no business being there soccer wise. They don't play. They practice and go to a great school...that would be tough to do for 4 years as you continue to get out recruited every year. Maybe it's worth it...?

that is great for you but it is 2023 and your 1996 experience is not relevant

Lol, Yes it was great for me. Thought I'd offer what I experienced, which is significantly more than what you offered.
