That's what im wondering. Sure, MS is more work than elementary, but it shouldn't be that bad.

Sorry. In our school they change from simply “passing” and “failing” to high school prep with actual grades, so every little thing matters a bit more. Our school is a bit unique so I was wrong to assume every school was the same.

I don't think that is unique and I would not consider it high stakes. Most middle schools give actual grades. Do these grades factor into college admissions?

OP—DC is taking high school courses that count towards high school GPA.

My kids are preschool and kindergarten so I won't provide an opinion, but just wanted to say I love this tradition and may have to start it this year for our family. What a nice memory for your kids!

So many kids are out that day. And other days, people get sick!

My middle school and high school students could have easily skipped the entire Thanksgiving week last year. But right before other breaks - even summer - they had exams.

Every year we take the whole week of Thanksgiving off so kids missed two days of school all through MS and HS. They also missed plenty of days during the year when they just wanted to sleep in or we wanted to take a family trip. No issues and have 4.0s. It may be more of an issue if your DC struggles in class though

Is it a half day? I’d continue the tradition

If you're going to skip a day of school, the day before a big holiday like that is the one to pick.

There could be a test or something that day, but I think a lot of kids are absent that day, so probably not much happening— even in MS.

It is a day of service in our MS.

Probably since 2020 we have always allowed DD7th grade to skip the day before Thanksgiving break, when we would go get breakfast and then do something fun as a nuclear family before the chaos of the holiday. The stakes weren’t as high in elementary school and these were typically days in which much learning didn’t occur. I’m wondering what the day before TG break looks like in middle school, and if we should alter our plans now. Do they do major learning the day before a break in MS?
