Think pouf. Hair, shoulders and dress from the waist down should be pouffy.

You should go thrifting. Just look for anything with shoulder pads, and then you know you've found an 80s dress. Not all of them are in-your-face 80s. You should be able to find something flattering.

This is OP - and yeah, I know, I agree. I'm on the board of the org throwing the party and don't I wish that it were just a nice event with a dress code of "hey spruce up a little!"

They love a theme, though!

I know what makes for the elements of an 80s prom dress - I went to the prom in the 80s! - just looking for some suggestions from the people who always post really good links here, if they have any time/ideas.

That Vince Camuto dress is close - but loose up on top, tighter on the bottom tends unfortunately to be my worst combination. Frump city on me. But I appreciate the suggestion, and it's very close. I'm much better in an a-line! Thank you, though!

I'm 57 and went to an 80's party many years ago in a prom dress. Found it at a thrift store for $10, along with matching dyed pumps I found at another thrift store. I also wore a wrist corsage, light blue eye shadow and crimped my hair. It was a hoot! Most of the other women wore Madonna-styled outfits. The best was someone in a Molly Ringwald inspired costume complete with red wig. You don't need to spend a lot of money (less than $50) for any of these looks.

Watch some Golden Girls then hit the thrift stores.

I will be going to an 80s-themed gala in about a month. It's galled a gala but it won't be SUPER formal - I'd still like to look nice and maybe get a new dress.

I'm 50 so I actually went to 80s proms - I don't feel like I need to wear something that's exactly what I wore then. But a little sparkle or shine would be good! A nod to the 80s - or, heck, maybe I will wear a velvet strapless dress and tease my hair up high again.

I'm five feet tall, short waisted, a 4 or 6 in most dresses. I'd say legs and shoulders are what I would most want to show, if I'm showing anything - and nothing too tight in the tummy. If a dress hits a bit above my natural waist, that tends to be a flattering cut for me. I like a t-shirt style formal dress, too, as long as it's got a little a-line cut.

I wouldn't mind a colorful dress - a gold or a silver would also be good.

Budget is fairly modest - couple of hundred dollars, if that - but I'll look at more $$$ dresses if you've got suggestions. Maybe I can find a dupe or look for it on Poshmark. Not interested in renting - I'm honestly just too hard to fit, and anything I get will need some alterations.

Thank you and rock ON.
