That usually just indicates fewer low-income students dragging down test averages which isn't the same thing as a strong school.

The U.S. News 2023-2024 Best High School results are out and Poolesville staff, students, and parents should be celebrating this week! It takes a lot of dedication and commitment to academics and learning to pop the charts and that's exactly what Poolesville did, so best wishes to you all!

Same goes for the other nine (9) MCPS HS that made National Ranking. Here is a breakdown of the categories and rank that these schools achieved.

MCPS HS Name National Ranking MD HS Rank DC Metro Area HS Rank MCPS HS Rank STEM HS Rank Magnet HS
Poolesville 140 1 3 1 39 45
Walt Whitman 147 3 5 2 180 (Unranked)
Wootton 235 4 8 3 96 (Unranked)
Walter Johnson 462 9 15 5 (Unranked) (Unranked)
BCC 574 12 17 6 (Unranked) (Unranked)
Richard Montgomery 681 13 18 7 (Unranked) 100
Northwest 963 18 31 8 (Unranked) 130
Montgomery Blair 1,285 26 37 9 (Unranked) 168
James Hubert Blake 1,838 34 44 10 (Unranked) (Unranked)
Springbrook 1,848 35 45 11 (Unranked) 204

Great job!

I find these bulk averages not to be as meaningful as actual outcomes. When I look at matriculation statistics, these "top schools" aren't really the top schools.

And they rank high because almost half the kids are magnet kids. They pulled all the high test scorers from surrounding schools.

I’ve had 2 kids in two different magnet programs there. The teachers aren’t really that great in general (a few gems, but otherwise same as other HS). They rely on smart kids teaching themselves together. Old principal started every meeting with a brag about being #1. 🙄 New principal is much better, but still working on a lot of internal cultural issues. There have been other parents on DCUM posting similar thoughts.

This is why I think rankings really need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Exactly! I could have written this post myself. I actually have one child in the magnet program. It’s more like 3/4 of the kids are in the magnet prgms! Majority of the teachers are horrible…the high ranking is totally because of the students…who are dedicated and hardworking, despite having a long, early morning commute and an antiquated building to learn in.

PP do you mind elaborating what you meant by “internal cultural issues”?
