The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey made me want to return to Europe (where I'm from) in the Winter to experience forests and snow again. I live in Los Angeles in the desert.

Another vote for one Italian summer. Also Hot Milk which has great descriptions for Spain- the jellyfish brought me there.

I moved to New Orleans for a few years because of how it was treated by Anne Rice in her books. It did not disappoint.

But to travel in your mind, now? Prague, with The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Mexico with Like Water for Chocolate.

The reason I decided to read this book is I heard Kira Salak on the podcast The Moth tell her travel story that took place in Africa. I thought it was the most compelling Moth story I ever heard. Look up "Boneyard Stretch."

Whoredom in Kimmage. It’s an old book that made me more aware of how different cultures, outlooks, and realities can be — even when people are speaking the same language.

The movie and the book Whalerider. Each of these books made me long to visit and really get to know places that seemed different from what I was used to — while these types of clear differences are still apparent.

I’ve been rereading the Amelia Peabody mysteries recently — if you like murder mysteries, they’re well written and fun and the descriptions of Egypt are totally immersive to me (although I’ve never been so I can’t confirm or deny accuracy).

Adrift. Even though tragedy hits (not a spoiler), their travels seem so amazing.

I won’t be able to travel for a while and need something that I can read that takes me away. The last book I read was “Harem” and it was delightful. I prefer heavy on the descriptions and no gore/violence.
