Be aware, it will likely take 4-8 weeks to be fully "processed". Most places will require you to have a physical, a TB test, and get background checked and pay for a sub license (all of which you will need to pay out of pocket for).

Another Q: because I have to do drop off and pick up I only would want to sub at the elementary school vs the district, which has the intermediate and HS several miles away from the elementary school. Is that ever an issue, if I get called for a certain school and keep saying no?

I have no experience in education but me becoming a single parent was very sudden and I need to earn money while I try to find steady work (been SAHM last few years).

These are questions you will have to ask the school/district. Most places are so desperate for subs, I'd imagine they'll meet whatever needs you have.

I'd consider becoming a para especially if you need health insurance.

Where I sub you can check boxes in their online assignment system to indicate what schools you’re willing to sub at. I don’t do elementary anymore. I’ve never gotten a call for a school I don’t have on my list.

Wouldn’t bother with this - those are runny separate companies, and the kid will be there for like 20 minutes. Too much transition for a kinder kid.

I echo the posters above in that no principal will care if you bring your child with you. Teachers have to be at our school by 8:15 (classes start at 9). Subs come in usually around 8:45. There is a sub shortage, you can pretty much set your own reasonable demands for this job. Your kid coming with you? A minor issue any principal will say yes.

Yes. I'm not sure why the child would need to e in their classroom before/after school, as a pp posted.

My principal lets a former teacher work whatever hours he wants as a sub. He has a side gig job and sometimes he does work for that during the school day. We need bodies in a room so we take anyone.

You could also ask about long term sun positions for more consistency. You’re probably fine having your child hang with you before school.

Have you ever done it before? Just asking because it is an exhausting job and with sole custody, it might be too much. Also, the pay is crap.

You talk with the administrator and your child's teacher. When my kids were in ES, they had one child of a teacher and the child's regular room teacher had no problem with the child arriving with their mother and being "dropped off" in her room before the doors opened. And the child stayed in her room until the Mom came back to pick the child up. If the child's teacher had to leave before the mom came by, she left the child in the front office and they watched her until her mother came. In our school, the K classes were in the hallway right near the front office, so it wasn't hard to check both places for her child.

It is at the principal's discretion whether you can bring your child into the building with you when you arrive and have them sent down to your assigned classroom or sit in the front office and wait for you to finish up at the end of the day. There is a major sub shortage in just about every single school district right now so chances are the principal will have no problems with these arrangements. I subbed at my own children's school years ago and it was not an issue.

I am a newly single parent with sole custody and looking at subbing. I am presuming if I sub at my child's school I will have to be at the school before students are permitted inside and stay after school lets out. Can anyone who has subbed tell me how that works (or doesn't work) when I need to ensure my child gets into and out of school? Child is in K and too young to be on own.
