Price out a RT ticket to your destination (US to Athens round trip);
Then price out sep one way tickets (on the way to Europe on miles and on the way home by cash; and
also price the way home as a multi-city stop in a stopover city (that is a hub of your alliance).
Example:
1. US to Athens (United miles ticket)
2. Buy the return multi-city ticket Athens to Vienna and Vienna to US through a European /star alliance partner on way home (or Athens to Dubai, Dubai to US)
Much much less than 50% of the original RT cash ticket that originated in US. Tickets that originate in the US are the most expensive.
And often the multi-city with stopover is cheaper than without a stopover (even when non-stop).
