OP I am an ASDEC-trained Academic Therapist. For their training courses, I understand what you mean about the content being fantastic, and the organization being less than perfect. They're a typical non-profit - focused on the core of what they do (dyslexia intervention) more than the administration.

But the average family calling ASDEC is either registering their kid for a summer reading or math course, or asking for a referral to an academic therapist (tutor). For these two services, ASDEC does well.

The simplest way is to email ASDEC and they will refer you. If you’d rather not do that or you call and they don’t have an immediate referral for you, you can find one directly. There are two ways. You can Google “academic language therapist” or “certified academic language therapist” and find people with websites, or you can also go to the website of our professional association, www.ALTAread.org and they have a database of certified academic language therapists by state.

The credential ASDEC trains for is Certified Academic Language Therapist, or CALT, so that is the practitioner you are looking for.

If you need more help finding someone please post again and there are a number of us on here who can help connect you to a therapist.

How do I find an ASDEC SIS trained tutor in my area? I live near Rockville MD.

For those that have completed all 5 levels of the SIS program through ASDEC, what kind of supports have you kept in place for your child after?

Used ASDEC tutor and huge impact on my child. My DC also loved their tutor - she had two different tutors and loved both of them. I can’t say enough good things about our experience with them.

Same as experiences above. ASDEC tutor has been transformational. We've been working with the ASDEC tutor since January. My son just made it through level 1, moving to level 2, and we are planning to stick with the tutor through level 5. Wonderful experience. Son has progressed quickly. Recently he was able to read out loud a NY times article. Some bumps but it is well beyond what he was capable of before January. Son is middle school age, just diagnosed with dyslexia in December 2022.

I echo the other comments. We have now worked with two ASDEC certified tutors and they have both been fantastic. My child started the program in January of 2nd grade and was testing on grade level by the end of the year. We still have a long way to go as he is just starting level 3 but we were really pleased with the progress.

For the PP, it varies for every child but I've been told it generally takes about 2 years to get through the 5 levels of the program.

We did the summer program and are now working with a tutor. It is very systematic and thorough. We are in the early stages but I feel like I already see improvement.

For those of you that have used ASDEC tutors how long did you work with them and are your kids at grade level for reading now?

We’ve explored many programs over the years and SIS is the best. Very comprehensive.

We used an ASDEC trained tutor. They were fantastic and far exceeded the sn school tutor where my child attended. I highly recommend them, it advanced my child years after the SIS instruction. You don’t interact with the administration except for finding a tutor or enrolling in the summer program. The summer program is really just a way they find kids that need instruction to refer to their tutors. Pls don’t hesitate to refer parents to their program, it is fantastic.

Life-changing for my son. Nothing else worked, and he couldn't read as a third grader. We got him to an ASDEC teacher, and it's been miraculous.

We got her name from the ASDEC HQ in Rockville, along with a few others, but she seemed the best match in terms of approach. Unless things have changed, the individual teacher does all the billing, so I'm not sure what the administrative issue would be.

I do not have a SN child, but I am an educator who works with children with learning differences. In the last year I took a course at ASDEC. The content was fantastic. However, the execution and organization weren’t the quality I had hoped for. I often refer parents to service providers, and I want to send some folks to ASDEC because I really believe in their approach and the research behind it. Before I do, however, I am curious to know what families’ experience with the administrative side has been.
