ECNL if game is close and meaningful players are subbed only for advantage. Change formation or fresh legs. In these games not uncommon for some on bench to not play. Those players get ample time in other decided games, tournaments, showcases. Nobody wants their kid in that spot, but being uncomfortable pushes some to grow.

For the likely play question, do you simply mean play 10-20% of game minutes? I don't remember seeing a kid roster for a game and sit the whole game, except for goalie when there are 2 goalies. I have seen players only get 5 or 10 minutes in a game though. Since players can't sub out and then back in for the half, there are kids who sub in the last 5 minutes of the 1st half or play the 1st 5 minutes of the 2nd half.


Hs ages need more players since they get injured more frequently.

My DC plays ECNL and they can only roster 18 for a game. I think it depends on the level of team your child is on. At the NCSL level, all of the team was rostered, showed up to games, and played. At the ECNL level, some teams have more players than are allowed to be rostered for a game. In this case, the coach sets the roster in advance, and only those rostered show up and play in games. The coach will also provide notice as to which kids are starting or not (and the starters usually play the majority of the time).

They line up the kids before every game and check the roster and player cards. How old is your child that you've never seen this?

Huh? I’ve managed 2 NCSL teams going back 5 years now. I’ve never seen an NCSL ref NOT check rosters before a game.

I assume you’re just not a manager and don’t realize it is happening?

I have. Make sure the team manager has the guest/player cards.

Is it mostly the same kids each time or do they set up a rotation? Seems tricky to handle fairly.

For the younger age groups everyone on the team should be on the roster but getting playing time is up to the coach. DC has been on teams where everyone played and on teams where a bunch of kids were mostly on the bench. IMO kids who are U13 or U14 and under should all get minutes.

For older age groups it usually depends on how competitive the team or league. For ECNL, MLSNext, etc. they often hold more kids on their master roster than can be on a game day roster so the coach or manager would send out the game day roster in advance. There are plenty of competitive teams that will put a max of 18 or 19 on their master roster so basically everyone goes to every game. There's always at least one person out due to injury or another obligation.

Nobody on the team roster was left off the game day roster. However, most clubs had more than 1 team so sometimes a player from one team guested for another. However, even if you dressed for a game, it didn’t guarantee playing time.

It definitely happens. Can’t say that they actually check anything, but they ask for them.

It depends on the league, but generally a Club Admin/Tram Manager submits/sets the roster online and a copy of that game roster (with info for both teams) is given to the ref at the field, who then checks the players present vs the game roster. That is how it is done for ECNL, ECNL-RL, EDP, NCSL.
