Another elder millennial here that remembers this used to be how business was done and the thought of my boss calling me causing anxiety is a completely foreign concept.

I feel like this must be generational (I'm an older millennial FWIW). If it's during business hours, then yes, you can answer the phone without being notified that there's going to be a phone call. This is how business was done for decades and nobody died from anxiety.
I’m also an elder millennial (37) and remain flummoxed about how anxiety-inducing phone calls of any sort are viewed by some in our cohort.
It is very strange.

Calling without notice is a thing?
I feel like this must be generational (I'm an older millennial FWIW). If it's during business hours, then yes, you can answer the phone without being notified that there's going to be a phone call. This is how business was done for decades and nobody died from anxiety.

Why are you always on edge? I can see being unnerved by an unscheduled call if that is not the norm, but once you understand this is how your boss operates, then it’s just SOP.

I have a few coworkers that do this. I don't feel guilty letting it go to voicemail and calling back. I am sometimes already on the phone! Or I'm finishing something. They can wait 5 minutes.

Do you mean do I have a boss that I trust and have a good relationship with so that either of us can call the other at any time without fear or being "unnerved"/ on edge?

Yes, that’s how my entire office operates though. We have fast moving items and it’s important to get several people in a call immediately. I hate it but I get it. WFH only worsened this. In office it’s much harder to gather people if they’re spread out physically in other conference rooms and meetings.

Do any of you have bosses that only call? No emails, and no warnings of upcoming meetings or scheduling. I know it is within their rights to do this but it can be unnerving for the employee to always be on edge. Anyone else have a boss like this?
