New poster: not if the college accepts the AP credits.

DS will start as sophomore because of one year in CC.

+1
My kids attend Chantilly HS in Fairfax. So, so many of those kids graduate with oodles of college "credit."

Schools have gotten smarter you may waive courses and have sophomore standing but still need to take a certain number of credits in residence.

Also a lot of the AP courses in the math and sciences don’t really prepare kids for the next level courses at top college. Skip Calc 1 and enroll in Calc 2 at your peril.

How's being first year sophomore different from eventually graduating as a junior?

I'm not from the US but my DC will in all likelihood got to college in the US, so would be interesting to understand how these things work.

And, just to confirm, this issue arises as High School Students get college credit by taking classes labeled college level, and also if they go to camp at a college during summer?

My dd entered with enough credits to be a sophomore. It helped with class registration because it opens based on status. She was in the Honors College at her "Flagship" and found that most of the students in the honors program had that many credits. It was an even split from that group on kids that graduated college in 3 years and those that chose to take on a 2nd major and finish in 4 years.

Ivies let you use AP credits to place out of prerequisites but you can’t use them to as credits toward graduation.

Not uncommon these days. My kid started with 62/63 credits due to AP/IB and whatnot.

My DS had enough credits to graduate in three years but was not considered a sophomore or “second year” at Uva. What schools actually slot you in as a sophomore?

Well aren’t you special. Can’t afford four years of college? Bummer.
