Of course your DH is correct. The reason IF works for many is because they're eating window is smaller therefore theoretically they have less time to actually eat thus eating fewer calories automatically. But if you're eating the same amount of calories but in a shorter window of time, heck no you're not going to lose weight.

Just posted today (or, probably more accurately, just noticed by me today).

Yes, calories in calories out counts. I like fasting for the autophagey benefits (which are potentially a tool against cancer) and because it helps me eat less.

But you have to eat less. And preferably of less processed food.

Do I also need to reduce calories for weight loss or is fasting a few hours enough?

Yes. The studies on intermittent fasting find that the program works only for those people who consume fewer calories during the period in which they eat. So they "think" they can eat and drink all they want during their six hour "on" period, but in reality they are simply consuming fewer calories. google it.

You'd lose more if you cut calories, but you'll likely lose fat even without cutting calories, particularly if you're obese, insulin resistant, or have PCOS.

The IF is just a tool to help you reduce calories. If you are still eating the same, it will not lead to fat loss. Your DH is right. IF is not magic.

IF reduces appetite and allows you to more easily cut calories.

For people with insulin resistance, it helps to increase insulin sensitivity which can, on its own, lead to weight loss. But generally you also need to cut calories to lose weight while IF.

You need to reduce calories. IF works by not allowing you to snack and eat extra calories outside of the window.
