They would much rather sell you one on the lot because every car on the lot is financed by the dealer

This all varies by manufacturer, so ymmv. Dealers get factory allotments which, so your new build is a car that will not be on the lot for them to sell. Generally, I'd toss factory allotments into two big buckets. First are cars that the dealers can easily sell. The second are the cars that they have to take that may not sell well. These are the models and trims that are mistakes and everyone knows will sit on lots. A Jeep Wagoneer fits into the first category and a Jeep Compass into the second. Go to a dealer and offer to take a Compass allotment off of their hands and they may give you a great deal, offer to take a Wagoneer off of their hands and they will charge you what they would have if it was on the lot.
If you are buying a car that is more expensive, you can try calling around to dealers further out to see if you can get a better deal. That used to work, especially if you find a dealer that isn't part of a wider network where shifting of inventory is easy

We are in the market for a new car. Unfortunately, most dealerships don't have the exact spec we want. The dealerships say they can order it for us however we would pay MSRP plus dealer fees.
Do dealers negotiate on new builds? Anyone had luck getting current dealerships incentives on a new build?
