My rising second grader is obsessed with anything mythology or mermaids. She likes the Emily Windsnap mermaid books and is reading the Percy Jackson series and other RR mythology series. The Princess in Black author also does another - slightly more advanced - series called Princess Academy that my DD loved.

She might like Redwall. If I recall they read aloud well. You could also try whatever horse series your library has although you might get sicker of pony club than you currently are of dragons. For when you feel up to dragons again you could try Dragonsong and Dragonsinger by Anne McCaffrey. Other non dragon fantasy that I like: Beauty by Robin McKinley, The Moorchild by Eloise Jarvis McGraw, Juniper and Wise Child by Monica Furlong, Chrestomanci series by Diana Wynne Jones, Alice Through to Looking Glass/Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Narnia by CS Lewis, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.

What "we" are reading to her or whst she is reading. My kid (same age) is reading Dragon masters and princess in black. We read to her things like Redwall, chronicles of Prydain. And will start "The Hobbit" this year.

Just ask what one is reading to their 2nd grader. Isn’t necessary to say “rising.”

Chronicles of Narnia
Cricket in Times Square
Zoey and Sassafras series (she may be able to read these herself, depending on her reading level)
We love the Wingfeather Saga, but it does have dragons! It’s more in depth than Dragon Masters (which my DC also loves) - in the same vein as Narnia and even Harry Potter

When you are ready for more dragons, I actually enjoyed the Wings of Fire books and I am not usually pro-dragon books.

We just finished Mr Lemoncello’s Library.

We read all of the Dalh books (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Danny Champion of the World, etc.) and then she got super into fantasy/dragon stuff (dragon girls, dragon masters, etc).

I need a break from dragons! What chapter books did you love reading to your kids? One break from dragons that I loved was Song of the Whale. I support her love of fantasy but I need another non-dragon book for a change of pace. She loves animals, science, friendship/family stories and other stuff in addition to dragons, so we are very open to suggestions.
