I can't imagine any reason other than living close to family to live in or near the DMV when I'm 75

It's not a 55-plus community, but most of the people in their complex (there are several different condo associations at King Farm) are in that demographic. They like the nice landscaping they don't have to maintain, nearby grocery store, and the shuttle to the metro when they want to come to DC. And many of their neighbors have moved to Ingleside or other nearby independent/assisted living communities as their needs have grown, so it's nice that they didn't have to go far away.

If they haven’t lived in the area before they should rent first year-probably an easy distance from you. Once they figure out how much they’ll see you and what activities they’re likely to keep doing, they can then weigh location, traffic, transportation options. If their main doctors are going to be here vs Florida that’s a factor too.

Maybe something like Fairlington if you could find a suitable unit for them. I’d figure out a longer term plan though at the same time. A plain condo may work for them now, but in a few years they will probably need a lot more services.

DC area doesn’t really have a culture of 55+ communities. Most people stay in their houses until 70-75+ so the senior communities are more senior. I’d just go for some generic townhouse development near to where you live. For example, if you’re in Rockville, maybe Clarksburg.

Eh. My mom was thinking of doing this a few years ago but there were a few newer ones where the people entering tended to be closer to 55. There was one in marriotsville and in Columbia that might be out of their price range. An older 55 plus community is leisure world in Silver Spring.

My retired parents are in a similar situation. Could anyone speak to Rockville vs Silver Spring with a similar budget? Silver Spring would be significantly closer to us but my impression is Rockville is safer and cheaper.

Since the reason that they are moving here is to be near you, the answer is a good full-service condo building near you. Once they hit the stage where they will need your active support, you want them close by to take them to appointments, deal with things in their house, or whatever.

where do you live?

Seeking advice as my parents begin their condo search from out of state:

Parents are moving to DC from a northern state with a much lower COL, but are making the move to be closer to my family here. Any recommendations of areas, or specific 55+ communities to look at? They spend winter in Florida and are very social there in their community, so looking for a community where they can make friends, have activities here as well.

Their max budget is 600k, ideally looking for 2 bedrooms, and preferably within 60 minutes of DC.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. Searching on my own isn't yielding much for me, but I am less familiar with the greater DMV region.
