I was worried about this- I wear both a head scarf and a long over coat (I call it a burka but I know ppl think a burka is one of those things we call a shuttle cock and goes over your face and head ) and I have brown skin plus we have 3 kids (so a big family) but was pleasantly surprised that people were perfectly nice and kind and played with my toddler and were just fine, in fact quite pleasant. I find that europeans in general know that Americans are friendly and chatty and are mostly used to it by now so mostly aren't stand offish.

How do people who live there put up with it for a week or more?

We just did 4 days in Copenhagen followed by a weeklong cruise in the Norwegian Fjords. I wouldn't say we ran out of things to do in Copenhagen, and in fact we probably could have filled a couple more days. i would have liked to go to Malmo, and there were a few sites in Copenhagen we missed. But we saw a LOT. I think 5-6 days would have been perfect.

I loved Oslo when I went there many many years ago too.

I think a week is a long time for Copenhagen. I preferred Norway for our trip. But DC prefer hiking, kayaking, etc versus museum and restaurants.

I've only briefly been to Copenhagen, but I think it depends on the season you are visiting, ect.

I am headed to Copenhagen this christmas for 10 days and we plan on doing some day trips to Malmo, sweden and probably one other day trip but are wanting just enjoy the city, the beautiful markets, ice skating, playgrounds, and of course the tivoli gardens! There is plenty for that amount of time at the holidays. Summer....idk, you aren't in the midst of a cozy holiday so maybe you can fit in another place.

Norway- so many cities to explore, the fjords, the train rides and cruises. Plus its beautiful!

I love Copenhagen and used to go a lot to see family. It’s an easy for trip abroad and a manageable, beautiful city. We are mixed Asian and white and we stood out; Copenhagen has way more immigrants than it used to but maybe someone else can speak better to the vibe you’ll encounter. A common day trip across the bridge is to Malmo, Sweden. People there have been more upfront about anti-immigrant beliefs and racism so do research if you add that on.

Copenhagen for an entire week? Maybe if your kids are enthusiastic walkers, museum-goers, and restaurant goers it would be fun, especially if you’re willing to do some of those days as a local or take train trips. If they’re strong swimmers that would kill the afternoons if you go in summer. Add a day trip to Ilsignor castle and plan a day at Tivoli. You could walk all of the city center in the remaining 2 days and have time to spare, so you’ll want to plan other day trips or add on another city.

I think that beaches around there and in northern Germany are really intriguing but I don’t know enough to suggest spots. Adding a few days of beach time to Copenhagen would be a good mix of city/Northern Europe/Scandinavia experience.

Is Copenhagen a good vacation destination as a standalone?

Family of 5 (Nigerian FWIW) kids 5,9,13 - never been to Scandinavia at all.
