Until your drains are checked, assume it’s that. Sunroofs aren’t designed to be water tight and submersible.
The drains get plugged over time. The water doesn’t drain and that leaks in around the seal.

it sounds like $5K is for replacing the whole sunroof and mechanism to open and close it. To save money, I bet you could seal the sunroof (basically caulk around the glass, close it, and never open again). Seems like your kid would not car if the sunroof was not operable.

Leaky sunroof in my BMW. I have them blow air through the drains every time I bring it in for an oil change and it's good to go. Cost: $0.

Does the sunroof specialist have name, per chance?

Check around for pricing. WTOP just did a story yesterday on area auto places over charging.

Whoa. Our Rav4 sunroof leaked and we got it fixed for like $250. The mechanic said it was a known issue for cars parked on the street, which was irritating, but at least it wasn't $5k!

OP here - initially it was to get the backup camera replaced since my regular mechanic wouldn’t do it. I figured I would have them check the sunroof issue while I was there. And of course they found 2 other issues but I will have my mechanic do that. I generally try to avoid the dealer at all costs.

Check the drains to make sure they’re not clogged up first. Screw dealers. Why are you still going to a dealer for a 12 year old out of warranty car?

Our 2011 Outback is leaking near the sunroof and the dealer is quoting $5K to replace the frame and mechanism. Says the seal is rotted and it is wet inside.
We had just turned it over to our teen. I can’t bring myself to spend that kind of money fixing it. The car only has 75k miles on it too. Otherwise it runs great.
We just bought a new car last year and have a loan on it.
Is it a bad idea to just let the teen drive it until it is undrivable? While we could buy another car and give her mine, I just don’t want another car payment. DH wants me to get a new car but I honestly don’t care. But then used car prices aren’t much different from new so it is hard to justify buying a cheap used car for her as a sub.
What would you do? Edmunds puts the value of the car at $7k.
