I did however really love Cozumel. I’d suggest spending your time there instead of Tulum

Thank you for this insight. Do you have a resort you recommend in Cozumel, and is a rental car needed there?

We’ve been been to the Yucatán twice with kids and had a great time. Highlights: biking around the ruins at Coba, Gran Cenote, Chichen Itza, Merida, Xcaret. As others have said, my kids were a little nervous swimming in the ocean, but loved playing on the beach. Have a great time, OP!

We were near Tulum in June.

Great time. No sargassum. Uncrowded, never felt unsafe.

Go on--you'll have a great time.

How did your family get around, did you rent a car?

PP here.

We did not rent a car.

I have done that previously and it's doable, but somewhat stressful. Didn't want to deal with that with kids.

We arranged airport transfer and hired drivers for day trips through Locogringo, and got taxis for shorter excursions (used rental concierge to arrange taxis).

It was pricier than other options, but totally reliable, safe and pleasant. Worked out great for a trip with family.

We just got back from Tulum and loved it!! I felt completely safe, the staff was amazing and it is so beautiful.
We stayed at La Zebra hotel at the South end and it was beautiful, quiet and no seaweed issue.
We rode bikes all along the beach road to the Tulum Ruins with no issues. The ruins were a bit touristy and full of people trying to convince you to buy things but saying no firmly was no issue.
I think you can avoid all scams by booking with a reputable tour guide. We booked a Chichen Itza/ Cenote tour through this company and they were great: https://www.getyourguide.com/tulum-l248/

I've heard great things about Dos Ojos Cenote but didn't get a chance to go.

I would warn it can be a bit hectic walking or biking along the beach road so I would be careful doing that with kids.

We went on a trip arriving at Cancun airport then immediately transiting to Tulum for Easter weekend. We stayed in a private beach hut at a resort. Shared bathroom/shower facilities.

My elementary school boys were mildly interested in the Tulum ruins. They liked the Mexican local Walmart-type store where we bought groceries. They liked seeing the lizards that were everywhere. Later they got a kick out of the wild iguanas we saw in Cancun.

After Tulum, we went to Chichen Itza for two days and then to a beach resort at Cancun to finish out the break. Everyone liked Chichen Itza and the Xcaret amusement park the best.

My children did not like swimming in the ocean. They did enjoy running on the beach. They refused to snorkel after we brought all the gear and an underwater digital camera.

Hygiene was a little substandard in many places. We did get mildly ill/nauseated, likely due to germs.

It wasn't the best trip ever but it had some highlights and I'm glad I went.

Op - did the sargassum ruin the beaches for you? Or did you find some without it?
Also any specific cenotes?

Sargassum. Lots of it.
