This is incorrect. The area median income for the washington metropolitan statistical area is $143,300. The median household income for Washington DC is $93,547 (2017-2021 in 2021 dollars).

For a family of 4..

Yea I look down on people who live “near Loudoun County” for sure. Especially when they justify it by saying they do it for the low crime rate. That’s like saying you aren’t sending your kids to UVA because you want them to have the out of state experience when we all know the real reason.

I moved out of DC to past Loudon in large part because I couldn’t stand being near jerks in the city who thought living in the city was the center of the universe

It’s nice to not be under constant threat of car break ins and other rampant property crime like I see in the Arlington threads. But when did I say I moved here specifically FOR the low crime rate? Wasn’t even a factor, it was mainly to be close to my tech job out here in the Reston/Herndon area (and lower house prices, I was making about half what I make now back then). I’m just now noticing after I bought a house out here a few years ago how everyone near DC is complaining of crime and I’m feeling thankful that it’s not my problem

I make a lot more than that. But it’s a good income. People on this site get carried away and I think a lot exaggerate.

Income is also just one side of the ledger. I know a lot of people making my income and more who have 200k+ of student loan debt at 7-8% interest for the next 15 years. Plus people also consume a lot and buy cars and houses that leave them with less flexibility

At 220k you make enough to have flexibility if you spend carefully.

So, I wouldn’t worry about how much others are making and spending, but rather how much flexibility your current income affords you now and in the future.

We're a family of three on $180K and I don't feel like we're missing much. I think we'd feel similar at the level with another kid.
