Definitely don't stress over the homework assignment. Go to the open house if it's not a pain to change your plans.

Op here. Now, after you mention this, I see there is a sentence says hat kid will get a treat or something if they complete it. So, this means it is "optional"?

Yes! I wouldn’t freak my kid out about this.

Should he expect to have daily or weekly homework as a second grader? And, the email specificiallly say they don't allow change of classroom request and classroom sneak peak is next Friday for an hour. We have plan already for this friday, should we change plan to go meet the classroom/teacher/classmates?

Did you receive any emails from mcps all summer? Were they all about equity or were there any about actual learning like summer packets?

I don't think summer work even at the HS level is required anymore.

It's 100% optional and it's easy for a kid to forget. Who knows if the 2nd grade teacher will even collect it? They just want the kids to keep doing some kind of school stuff over the summer and not to forget how to write or count.

OP - summer work is always optional. It's not until HS level and some AP/IB courses that summer work might be graded/quizzed on, but even then you have to give some time that a kid who just enrolled could complete the assignment the first week.

In elementary school, summer work is provided so that students can engage in math and reading every week to help prevent "summer slide". If you don't get to it, it's fine. But if you aren't doing any sort of enrichment (even going to the library periodically), then it might be a more difficult transition back to school mode in the fall.

This! No way I would make my kid do this nor would I be mad if he forgot about it. If he does it, great. But the school will not care at all.

It's for sure not required for second grade. Teachers cant even give grades from hw assignments at the elementary level.

It's nice to go to the sneak peek and meet the teacher and see the classroom, but it's not required. There will be staff there on the first day to help them find their way.

I would not be too upset with a second grader over this. Now if he was in middle or high school, then yeah.

But honestly, I'm surprised summer homework was given since MCPS has decided homework is optional at the elementary level. Are you sure it's required?
