At our pool mini team is the absolute best benefit of being a member - something like $150 for the seasons, the coaches are great, the kids love it because they get to be around the older kids and learn to swim. Ours doesn't have any attendance requirements and the only skill required to join is a good attitude and the ability to do rudimentary freestyle (not even legal). The coaches are amazing.

It was worth it for my then-5 year old! She had ok freestyle and backstroke and could swim a couple of laps but without much stamina. By the end of minis, she also had breaststroke and a racing start off the blocks (our league is not near DC and uses them). She loved practicing adjacent to the rest of the team, meeting the big kids, and wearing a team cap. Now she’s a competent 8&U and loves swimming, but more importantly she has lots of friends at the pool.

The kids for whom it was not useful were the ones who couldn’t swim a lap, didn’t have rotational breathing for free, and didn’t want to swim. There are a few parents every year who think minis=swim lessons. No matter what our club says in the requirements for minis, there’s always kids who spend the entire season shuffling hand over hand down the gutter and back and/or crying at the end of the lane.

I will add that we did a college sitter for the 5 weeks that he did mini team which worked for us, took a lot of the logistics out of it and made it a low key summer (not running around for different camp drop offs). Did a little camp and vacation in august.

We did a mini team this summer for my 5 year old and for us it was worth it. He made a lot of progress and they definitely teach stroke development. He also had a lot of fun. I grew up doing summer swim so I’m also bias, but I think swim team is a lot of fun and a great way to become a strong swimmer.

it's totally worth it at our pool. the daily instruction led by older teens that most little kids want to impress is infinitely better than a weekly class at your rec center or Kids First or Goldfish.

(Sorry, my main question is in the title, is minis for summer worth it? It wouldn’t be a huge hassle but it would be kind of a hassle to schlep him there and back in the mornings since both parents work)

My 5 yr old passed the patch test a few weeks ago, he did a few private lessons to get him sort of doing freestyle. He made a lot of improvement earlier in the summer with two weeks of daily lessons (couldn’t swim at start of summer), he doesn’t like to listen to us but loves the high school/college kid instructors haha.

We aren’t doing any lessons this fall term to get used to kinder, but maybe will do a weekly lesson in spring.

Doing pre team/minis in summer would be a logistical hassle but it seems like mini = 7-8 weeks of daily swim lessons would probably help him a lot given that he does well with some structured instruction and then just being told to practice besides someone other than us. Would they teach some stroke development?

Other option is to take it easy next summer with maybe private lessons a few times a week and do minis or regular team in summer 2025. I don’t know if he will get into it enough to want to do club (though he does really like it) or winter later, but it’d be great from him to get good instruction/stroke development early on so he can enjoy swimming as an adult regardless.
