I have a friend that owns a body shop. They do charge more when the insurance company is paying, because of all the paperwork, objections, and delays in payment. When I come in for stuff, I tell him I'll pay on my own and I get a lower price.

OP ended up fixing car $2,400. Got a junkyard bumper, grill, headlights, new sensors, fender adjusted and fixed.
$8,000 through insurance. Now car has no record of accident and daughters license clean
Lucky for us other car had no comprehensive coverage. They tried to file on me. My company said no way as “she said he said”
Other car needs a bumper and hood. She can hit junkyard too. It drove. My car drove. We both just need junkyard parts

That's why you give your daughter a $2k car and nobody should be fixing bumps and scratched on an old car. $3000 invested wisely would be $30k in 5 years. What a waste of resources.

So go to tech school for half a decade (or longer), buy a million dollars with of shop tools and diagnostic equipment, lease some shop space, get all your hazmat permits and inspections, hire a couple techs to help you at $90k/yr, and open your own garage.
Then you can charge people whatever you think is fair. I’m sure after all that cash outlay to get started you’ll be all about not recouping your expenses.

No clue what she said. But yeah cars are expensive. Paint is hard to do well and is expensive. Air bags are expensive. If your airbag deployed, I’d be very skeptical of a cheap repair, especially if my kid is driving the car.

My car was in an accident. daughter not me, The body shop quoted me $7,000 to fix through insurance. They negotiate through insurance plus get me rental car.
They deemed accident he said/she said so I was told if I don’t file claim won’t impact insurance. N
Got it fixed $3,400 the cash price at another place. Given I have a $500 deductible worth being out $2,900.
My favorite body shop wanted $800 to diagnose air bag light. Local guy, you got hit on bumper by sensor, replace that sensor.
