Are you sure he hasn’t started puberty? My 14yo has no outward signs that I would notice (voice, facial or armpit hair etc) but has definitely started puberty per our ped. The only signs at first are below the belt, which you would (obviously) probably not be aware of. The major growth comes a bit later, usually- sometimes a lot later.

Has your DS ever been tall? Has he been growing fine the last few years- but just not a growth spurt yet? What were your and DH’s growth patterns- did either of you mature on the late side? I believe peds take all of that, and more, into account.

My own DS is a bit behind at age 14.5 but DH was the same, so it is no surprise. Our ped has no concerns.





At what age do peds stop telling parents what happens in checkup?

My DH was mini freshman year. The wrestling coach chased him all year because he wouldn’t even need to cut weight for whatever sub-100 pound category they wanted him for. He’s never been a beanpole, he was just little. He’s around 5’11 and 215 now - just a super late bloomer.

If this is OP, you are obviously concerned so stop crowd sourcing DCUM and getting defensive about anyone that says not to be concerned. Talk to your kid’s pediatrician in advance of the check-up if you don’t want your kid aware of your concerns.

My son was just shy of 16 when his voice changed and he grew some underarm hair and leg hair. He’s now 17 and 6’4” tall and still growing. I was also worried, but DH was a late bloomer and he happens to take after him.

I was 16 and 5'2" when I entered my junior year of high school. I finished junior year 5'8". I am now a married father of two (married for 21 years) and happy.

No, I would not be concerned. Puberty will happen, it is as inevitable as death and taxes.

My kid is starting high school in a couple of weeks and turns 14 shortly after. He’s 5’3” (despite very tall parents) and hasn’t started puberty yet. I’ll discuss with his pediatrician at his annual check up just after his birthday but I don’t really want to cause any unnecessary worry in my kid who so far just seems to be content to wait for his growth spurt.

Would you be concerned? What might the pediatrician recommend, if anything?
