The younger girls teams at SYC had a few teams disappear altogether due to girls leaving for other clubs. Some teams were merged. B and C team's existing player retention was about 3-5 max. The lower the team the less people are willing to hang around if there is no additional value.

Older boys appear to be much improved and should be competitive. Drastic changes with 10+ new players, especially the 2007's.

Boys side did not improve b/c BRYC coaches took their players elsewhere.

Girls side improved dramatically:
2021-22 - 17.3% win or tie in ECNL reg season
2022-23 - 49.0% win or tie in ECNL reg season

Is it fair to say that BRAVE Girls and Boys ECNL are still struggling for survival?

Did you see any improvement after the merge last year for those 12 (or 10) teams?

It seems like lots of teams split up at the U13 level when ECNL/GA/MLS Next league becomes a factor and other teams are expanding rosters for 11v11. Once a critical mass leaves, the rest seem to follow quickly. There were at least three 2011G teams in NOVA that lost ~80% of their top team roster this year. Mass exodus seems rarer at the higher age groups.

I think that says it all. I'm also aware of a top team that lost significant amount of players, but not the 13 best.

This again? Yes, the 09s were a weak year for Vienna, and the 09 BRYC ECNL team was winless with some crazy goal differential against them the year before.

IIRC, the 09 Brave coach was new to the club. That team also would have been ECNL-RL, not NCSL, previously, so your post seems to have a lot of incorrect hearsay. I also know that most of the 09 VYS ECNL-R team is not last year’s Brave team, so most did not drop down.

That said, the ECNL website no longer shows last year, but the 10s were very good, right there with Union and VDA. Something like 75 goals scored and 20 against, IIRC.

VYS has excellent coaches on the girls’ side, and is doing just fine competing with McLean, Arlington, Loudoun, GFR, etc. NVA will be interesting to see and Union and VDA get a big boost from combining multiple large clubs. As BRYC girls turn around, hopefully the Brave teams will not be as VYS-dominated on the girls’ side, and they will continue to strengthen.


2010 VDA and Union have really good coaches so they will add players and the teams will develop. This will not happen at BRAVE. Kickball stops working when the players get older.

Alexandria girls lost a lot of players this year. I think their top 2009 team lost half and their second team lost at least 12.it definitely wasn’t typical but between the GA mess, terrible coaching and the way Alexandria treated families- it was not surprising.

My son joined a team where I think it was somewhat similar numbers and we wound up with a lot of kids playing up. There was an A and B team. The coach said he was rostering him to B which seemed lower than his level but he assured us he would have lots of opportunities to guest on A. This part was thankfully true because the B team was a mess! That year a lot of kids were moved to to A and a lot of kids who weren’t moved up chose to leave. There were very few kids left and because it wasn’t a great team, they had a poor turnout at tryouts. As a result, at the last minute the coach apparently made offers to anybody who showed a interest. Half the kids were playing up a year and a bunch of kids had no business playing at all. If my son hadn’t been able to play all the A games along with B, he would have walked early on in the season. We now know that always ask a lot or questions.

Well your story is the most I’ve ever heard! My boys teams have seen under 5, usually less changes (leaving and coming), every year. I thinks that normal. Most who leave, leave for more competitive teams.

What age group? There are certain transition years when kids move or it could be the coach or a losing team.

When DD's team had a winning season all 17 players came back. The previous year maybe 3 kids left.

What's the most number of players you've ever seen leave a team when the year is over? DD's team had a roster of 17 last year and 13 of them left the team after the season ended. Most people said it was because of the coach and while we didn't personally have a bad experience in that respect, I heard and saw enough involving other players/parents to understand why. Now it's a completely different team and about 1/3 of the team is playing up a year because without those players, there wouldn't be a team for this age group. I'm assuming this is not normal but I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this kind of "turn over" from one year to the next?
