I think the way you said this was a little much.

But I agree. I tapped on this thinking it was about a new home purchase. And then thought maybe it was about renting a house; but it’s “just” a room in a house? Is this any different than a dorm room or suite or renting their own apartment? if they needed to buy their own bedroom furniture, I would help them do that, but otherwise this doesn’t seem like a special occasion where consideration of gifts is warranted.

+1
And really it's even less than renting their own apartment, because presumably the person that owns the house will have living room furniture, dining room furniture, pots/pans, etc.

+1 I was thinking the same thing!

At first I thought this was about purchasing a first home. You are merely talking about renting a room! Omg!

^they were kind enough to buy me an expensive appliance that didn't come with first house. Just saying acts of service are enough for first room rental (IMO)

My dad helped me build furniture from target, that was enough (for me) in this situation First house, that is different.

Cleaning supplies or a basic tool kit if they didn’t get one for college

I just don’t understand how cold and mean-spirited some of you are .

Is this how you treat people IRL?

Please think before you post. Ask yourself, “What am I do spreading in the world?”

This!!
I remember been so mystified at how expensive cleaning supplies were when I first started housekeeping. I had to build up an inventory over time.

Doordash credit — so they can order out and dine in easily.

A piece of furniture, nicer than what they would buy on their own.

My oldest is moving into the first new home. Renting from a friend who just bought a house. It’s bittersweet - I love seeing my kid a lot and I love that my kid is taking this step into adulthood. Besides helping move their stuff, what sort of gifts would be welcome? It’s really a room rental so I’m not going to stock the kitchen. But I want to give gifts that will be meaningful and helpful besides grocery gift cards. Thank you.
