I agree with a jammer at the minimum. He'll feel even more out of place if he's wearing board shorts. I would reach out to the coach and make sure everyone isn't wearing briefs.

I can't answer the first part because my kids just do summer dive for fun, but for the second he definitely needs the tighter fitting suit. He can do a jammer (mid-thigh length) instead of the little brief, but shouldn’t be using board shorts.

My son is 11 (12 in October). He took a diving class through Arlington parks and rec this summer and loved it. He wanted to take more but sadly we were waitlisted for all options for the fall. However, he still really wants to learn. I found Alexandria Diving Club and saw that they offered classes but they are usually kids age 4-10. I emailed the coach and he recommended the advanced class but and said to sign up for that because it is longer and there are more options and they will teach him the basics. The times realy do work better for our family. However, my kid is really nervous about being out of place. Does anyone have any experience? I assume since the coach says it is fine, it is obviously fine. But just wanted to check in with real world experience. Thank you.

Also, dumb question. Can he just wear swim shorts? I think he is probably not ready (emotionally lol) for a speedo.
