If you feel really self-conscious about this, to the point where you aren’t going to have a good time because of this, I have a “strategy” that might work for you.
I ignore the entrees altogether. I get an appetizer, and then a vegetable side or two, or a salad. So it’s like I get one vegetable-based dish that will nourish me, and one “fun” appetizer or side that will help me feel like I’m celebrating a fun night out. Or I see if the table is interested in a few apps, and then we all get a salad if that’s what sounds good to us.
I’ve ordered a salad and a side of truffle fries “for the table,” and people cheer and maybe order another appetizer or side.
Sounds like a good plan, and I like the size zero poster who does not care what her friends eat above.
