I cooked some food for my family on an ancient gas stove before I left for a work trip to the Middle East. Got back 6 days later and the oven had been on the whole time. This was about 10-12 years ago and I'm still dumbfounded that (1) no one noticed and (2) the house and everyone in it was fine. I'm now super paranoid about turning off appliances when not in use.

If it's gas, I would air out the place because of CO2 if it was burning all day. Other than that, count yourself lucky and don't do it again.

They would put their head in with the pilot light off, so the gas wouldn’t burn off.

Oh my god! How long were you gone?

The house didn’t burn down at all?

It’s fine. I cook dishes that require 10-12 hours in the oven…not at 400, but it’s still fine.

Other than high electric/gas bill next month, you are fine. Gas is not odorless. You will definitely smell it before it goes "BANG".

The next time you use it, stay for the duration to check whether something's burning. I know you didn't smell anything when you returned to your apartment, but just in case.

It's no different than cooking a frozen turkey all day. As long as nothing was in the oven to burn or melt, you're fine

Turn off the oven.

Yesterday morning, early, around 6:00 I used the oven to bake some bread that I was bringing as a gift to a co worker.

I then spent the night at my boyfriend’s. I just got home and my oven has been on at 400 since yesterday morning at 6:00 (it’s now 1:30 pm).

My condo is warm, but that’s about it. It doesn’t smell like gas, although I understand that gas can be odorless?

Do I need to do anything or worry about anything? I’m going to open my windows and run the fans now.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. I’m not one of those people who has to double check that they turned off their stove or locked their front door - clearly I need to be!
