Seven is not on the late side to start and starting at seven or even eight will have no bearing on any kid’s chances of playing competitive hockey after age 18. Participation numbers roughly triple in local orgs from 6U to 8U, with an even bigger jump among girls.

The skating advice is dead on though. She has to be able to skate. If she does private lessons and practices 2-3 times a week in the fall she would be ready to join a hockey program mid-season this year.

For programs, MYHA is far and away the best option for girls because they have a lot of girls in the program. Most of what she’ll do at that age is co-ed and that has its benefits but I think it can get pretty lonely for most girls if there’s only one on the team. MYHA has enough girls to sustain a girls only teams from 8U and up.

First paragraph is probably true for girls hockey. I don't have experience there yet. However, 7 is on the late side for boys hockey and if you don't make an effort to catch up, you may think your kid just isn't a "natural" or a "gifted athlete" when in fact, many of the 7 year olds have been skating since they were 3, including in lessons, and playing on spring and summer teams. If you take skating lessons for 2-3 days a week for a year starting at 7, that is enough to catch up, at least with the skating, in my opinion.

Ice hockey is crazy expensive. How about roller hockey? Have to drive to Fredericksburg on Saturday mornings but learn the game for free and get all the gear (besides skates) for free. Be assigned to a team based on level and or age - elementary, middle, high school. One game a week and one optional practice.

At first, just fine the learn to play orogram closest to your house (probably Laurel)
Free equipment and a chance to try it out in a supportive and fun environment

+1. The Director of MYHA girls hockey is incredible. I have two boys who play the sport ( one AAA) and know the director well. He is a former Team Maryland coach. Huge asset to the program. We left Medstar years ago and it is definitely not the place to be as a girl ( or boy for that matter) Very little support for female hockey players from the Director, especially as they get older.

Once she learns how to skate, look up the caps learn to skate program. It’s at all different rinks and provides hockey equipment. It’s a great program!

Learn to Play sessions at Laurel are good. Wells Warriors is another local program that’s not too far. We’ve done skating lessons at Wheaton during the summer and at the outdoor rink in SS during the winter months. Both are fine. Plus check out DMV Womens Hockey on instagram for local clinic information and opportunities to watch high level women play in the area!

Learn to skate group lessons - Wheaton Ice Arena is probably the closest to your house.

Red Line Hockey plays at Wheaton and Cabin John. https://www.rlacmetros.com/Default.aspx?tabid=192285

Laurel = Gardens Ice House, also not far from NW DC https://www.thegardensicehouse.com/

The drive to and from Medstar from that part of town can be a bit of a slog (from my experience). Wheaton is the closest. I drove my kid from school near Fort Totten to Wheaton for years and it was surprisingly easy.

We live east of the park in NW DC. My daughter hasn’t been interested in team sports but says she wants to learn how to skate and try hockey. She’s a good skier (but not otherwise super athletic).

Is there a place within 30 minutes of DC where she can learn to skate and get the fundamentals of hockey/join a team for beginners? All suggestions/links appreciated. Thanks!
