Most parents have kids all in the same school district. I'd venture to say there are very few families that have kids in both Las Vegas public schools and MCPS--and those are probably "blended families" so there are more custodial parents in the mix.

Makes the crowds at beaches and other popular vacation destinations easier.

How does what help working parents? The school schedule? I think most schools are in session for about 9.5 months and on summer break for about 2.5 months, whether that’s August-May or September-June what difference does it make?

We are in NC. Year round middle school started last week. Off for three weeks in October, three in January, three in April and then most of June and part of July.

In NY they start after Labor Day. I have no idea how when kids starting school is an issue for working parents. Camps start and end through all the possibilities in the areas. No big deal.

I’m in the Midwest and school starts the day after Labor Day and they get out of school mid June. I like our schedule and think it makes sense for the climate we have here. I’d hate if school started back in August when it’s still so hot that you just want to be at the pool all the time and I’m glad we don’t get out in May when it’s usually not hot enough to swim outside yet here.

Why would working parents in Maryland care when school starts in Vegas?

I am in Seattle and our schools start on September 6.

We're in the SW and school has started for many public districts in the past few weeks. My kids are in private and they start tomorrow. They get out the week before Memorial Day.

My nieces and nephews in California go back next week, I think.

My high schooler in Virginia had a six-week break and is already back at school every day, basically, with lunch bag in hand. Marching band practice 8:30-3:30 every week day. (The football team is practicing nearby, and the cross country kids are running past, too.) Started in July. Those six weeks were spent going on a vacation and napping the rest of the time to rest up for the coming 10-month slog.

It's climate-based in many warm areas. August is brutal so you may as well be in school. June is lovely and a great time to be outside or traveling.

I don't see the connection to working parents, unless you're asking for a shorter summer.

Our school system goes from August 7 to the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend. Don't love it. But it doesn't matter for working parents. At least to me. It's the same either way.
