Subject: Plastic boxes instead of shoe boxes? Worth the effort?
I would spend the money on shelves rather than stacking containers. Or racks as a second option as a PP suggested. Shoe boxes are right out.

IKEA has shoe boxes. 4 pack for $10. I use these in white for my handbags.

I'm the PP. So I'm a bit of a shoe person. I probably have close to 300 pairs (I worked at a shoe store for a long time). I wear each so rarely that I don't find that they smell. I put odor controlling bags of charcoal in my closet though. Everyday shoes I keep in my mudroom but I live in Seattle and spend 9 months a year in rain boots.
These are the better containers my husband uses. I want to upgrade to these but you can imagine that will get expensive and I can't really justify it.

NP here, I splurged on these during pandemic closet organizing, love them! I think I waited until they were on sale or maybe bought them with my special birthday coupon after signing up for it either savings or whatever.
These are really nice! I wish I had the space for them. My shoes are in pull out Elfa shoe racks. Easy access but they do get dusty over time.

My seldom used shoes are in the original boxes. I simply mark what shoes are inside on the edge of the box lid for ease of locating. Nothing stinks.

I have all my shoes in plastic boxes from Container Store and love that I can see them. If the top layer gets dusty, I wipe them off with a damp papertowel. Yes, I have to unstack them, but I'm tall and it's not a problem. After I wear a pair of shoes, I don't put them away in their box right away -- wait overnight. Some of my shoes are dress heels that have been in those boxes for as long as 5 years. I've never had an odor in any of my boxes or shoes.

plastic is not the best storage material. For any clothes and I'm sure shoes, over time, they aren't ventilated and they develop a smell.
But then I don't keep shoes in a bedroom closet, at all, because of their ordinary, faint odor.

I wouldn’t do clear boxes because if they’re stacked you’d have to unstack them to get to the shoes, right? I think I’d rather have a rack.

They get dusty. I have them and wish I had just spent more and gotten the nice cloth ones with the fold down sides from the container store. My husband has those and they're great.

I have always kept my shoes in stacks in their original boxes. I'm finally thinking I should switch to stackable clear plastic boxes. Before I make the switch and throw away all those original boxes just wondering if there is any reason I shouldn't based on others' experience. I'll admit this is a pretty dumb question. Thanks.
